NIMONIC alloys that are available commercially are NIMONIC 75. NIMONIC 90, NIMONIC 100, NIMONIC 80A, 81, 86, NIMONIC 90, NIMONIC PE11 and 16. The NIMONIC alloy 75 is an 80/20 nickel-chromium alloy containing titanium and carbon as additives. This alloy was first introduced for use as turbine blades during the 1940s. It is readily fabricated and welded. This alloy exhibits good corrosion resistance, mechanical properties and heat resistance. Some of the standard forms in which this alloy is available are extruded section, hexagon flats, pipe, plate, strip and wire.

Introduction

Grade 904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. This high alloy stainless steel is added with copper to improve its resistance to strong reducing acids, such as sulphuric acid. The steel is also resistant to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion. Grade 904L is non-magnetic, and offers excellent formability, toughness and weldability.

Grade 904L contains high amounts of expensive ingredients, such as molybdenum and nickel. Today, most of the applications that employ grade 904L are replaced by low-cost duplex stainless steel 2205

INCONEL® alloy X-750 (UNS N07750/W. Nr. 2.4669) is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium alloy used for its corrosion and oxidation resistance and high strength at temperatures to 1300°F. Although much of the effect of precipitation hardening is lost with increasing temperature over 1300°F, heat-treated material has useful strength up to 1800°F. Alloy X-750 also has excellent properties down to cryogenic termperatures. The economics of INCONEL alloy X-750 coupled with its availability in all standard mill forms has resulted in applications in a wide variety of industrial fields. In gas turbines, it is used for rotor blades and wheels, bolts, and other structural members. INCONEL alloy X-750 is used extensively in rocket-engine thrust chambers. Airframe applications include thrust reversers and hot-air ducting systems. Large pressure vessels are formed from INCONEL alloy X-750. Other applications are heat-treating fixtures, forming tools, extrusion dies, and test machine grips. For springs and fasteners, INCONEL alloy X-750 is used from sub-zero to 1200°F. Depending on the application and the properties desired, various heat treatments are employed. For service above 1100°F, particularly where loads are to be sustained for long times, optimum properties are achieved by solution treating (2100°F) plus stabilization treating (1550°F) plus precipitation treating (1300°F). For service below 1100°F, the alloy may be strengthened by precipitation treating after hot or cold working or by precipitation treating after equalizing or solution treating. A furnace-cooling treatment is also used to develop optimum properties for some applications.

Monel 400 (Ni 67%) is made of a Nickel-Copper alloy that offers outstanding corrosion resistance in seawater. Monel 400 better withstands oxidation attack as compare to other copper based alloys and significantly prevents attack by sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid and alkalis. It offers outstanding resistance to steam and has good toughness that makes it an ideal material for use in the oil refining industries.

Monel alloy 400 can retain its hardness at the various temperature limits. In annealed condition, monel alloy can be used up to 1000oF or 480oC. It has medium to high strength, fine weldability and exceptional mechanical characteristics at subzero temperatures. Alloy 400 is more economical and superior than Nickel.

Inconel 718 Tube comes under the ASTM B163 and B516 specifications. The dimensions vary according to ASTM, ASME and API standards. Pipe fittings are available in various materials and different shapes and grades.
